The Greek islands you have to visit

Now that summer is coming I thought to have a post for greek islands. There are many so I decided to choose some of them and place them into categories.

For history:

In fact any little place in Greece have a piece of history BUT if we had to choose for greek islands, some of them, where history is more “intense” these are:

Rhodes
Rhodes located in the eastern Aegean Sea. It is the largest of the Dodecanese islands and also the island group’s historical capital. Historically, Rhodes was famous worldwide for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The medieval Old Town of the City of Rhodes has been declared a World Heritage Site. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. Gape at Rhodes magnificent, walled old town, where the Knights of St John ruled from 1309-1523, and explore their quarter before visiting the 14th-century Palace of the Grand Masters.

Delos
The island of Delos near Mykonos, near the centre of the Cyclades archipelago, is one of the most important mythological, historical and archaeological sites in Greece. The excavations in the island are among the most extensive in the Mediterranean; ongoing work takes place under the direction of the French School at Athens and many of the artifacts found are on display at the Archaeological Museum of Delos and the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.

 Corfu
The island is bound with the history of Greece from the beginning of Greek mythology.Corfu is a very popular tourist destination Up until the early 20th century, it was mainly visited by the European royals and elites, including Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany and Empress Elisabeth of Austria; today it is also widely visited by middle class families (primarily from the UK, Scandinavia and Germany), leading to mass tourism. It is still popular with the global elite however, and in the island’s northeast the homeowners include members of the Rothschild family and Russian oligarchs.

Crete, Heraklio
Heraklion, or Heraclion also Iraklion  is the largest city and the administrative capital of the island of Crete, Greece. It is the 4th largest city in Greece. Heraklion is close to the ruins of the palace of Knossos, which in Minoan times was the largest centre of population on Crete. Though there is no archaeological evidence of it, Knossos may well have had a port at the site of Heraklion as long ago as 2000 BC.

For diving:

Karpathos
For organised dives in sea caves full of colourful aquatic life, check out Karpathos Diving School on Karpathos.

Apella beach which has been awarded in the past as the best European beach

Milos

Milos has phenomenal diving; Diving Center Milosbrings you face-to-face with deep-sea fish, dolphins and even monk seals

For parties nightlife etc:

Mykonos
Mykonos of course is well known for for the nightlife. But it is also a great island with amazing beaches

Skiathos
Skiathos has also great night/morning life and last years attracts mostly young people especially the locals that has just graduated.

For relaxing:

Alonissos

Alonissos is a small island and you transfer mostly by walking, is full of forests orchards and wildflowers so you can come closer to the nature.

also you can meet seals

For “romance”:

If you want to spend your vacation in a romantic way, with breathtaking sunrises and amazing view, Santorini is the one and only!

For food and drink:

If you love greek cuisine then in general you’ll like it everywhere. Every island has his local food and products and you’re gonna like them. But most popular for their food and drinks are:

Lesvos

Lesvos is renowned for its olive oil and its ouzos (it produces some 70 percent of all Greek ouzos). The national aperitif is served with mixed mezedhes (appetizers) at traditional ouzeries (ouzo restaurants)

Crete

Crete is famous for its olive oil and specialties like dakos (rusks topped with tomato, olive oil and cheese) and myzithra (sweet cheese, used in kalitsounia pastries). Horta (wild greens) provide seasoning for fish or roast lamb. And for drinks tskikoudia and raki of course!

olives, mezedhes and raki

A bit of everything:

If you want a little bit of everything I think that Chios is one of the islands you have to visit. It inclouds local products like mastic great view and history like the 11th-century monastery of “Nea Moni”, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located on the island.
